Hi everyone, Chris from Trinidad ..

Hi everyone, I'm Chris from Trinidad in the Caribbean and I recently bought my RX8 which is a 2009 JDM Type RS, also known as the R3 in the US.
Love my RX8 and have been crazy about this beautiful rotary Wankel engine ever since... I'm seriously considering installing a Sohn adapter, so here I am, eager to learn more about this marvelous piece of Wankel engineering and also to contribute as much as I can. Here are some pics of my car at the dealership when I bought it .. nice to meet you all.

    Hi Chris,

With the sophisticated oil metering system on the 2 gen RX-8, there is no need for anything like a Sohn adapter. It is wise still to run some good quality 2 stroke pre-mix in the fuel but your car has an excellent metering system with dual electronic metering pumps. Make sure you use the correct oil filters, N3R1-14-302. Richard Ramnarine at Rota Performance should stock them.

Let me know if there is any way I can serve you. I trade reduced prices for Roti

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I like the idea of the Sohn adapter and a separate oil reservoir being able to meter clean 2 stroke oil into the chambers, which is why I was considering this option, and I would like to do everything possible to prolong the life of my rotary. I've already acquired spark plugs, air filters, oil filters (yes, N3R1-14-302, this filter is able to handle a higher pressure and is different to the filter used on the Series 1 engine) and also Idemitsu 10W 30 full synthetic racing oil. ( My research indicates that Idemitsu is the only synthetic recommended for the rotary). What is your opinion on this?
So you think it's absolutely unnecessary to install a Sohn adapter? I'm considering pre-mix also... what is the best 2 stroke oil to use and at what ratio? I've already navigated your MAZMART site, and I like the rear fog lamp kit shown on the Mazda site. Won't mind purchasing this since my RX-8 is JDM and doesn't have one but it might add a nice touch to the rear. We can definitely work something out for Roti , just let me know when you're coming to Trinidad.

    Chris.

    Hey Chris,
Idemitsu is a rather expensive oil and might be unnecessary. The myth that synthetic oils killed the rotary started way back in time, when synthetics were rather aggressive to the gaskets. Nowadays there's just a few oils that aren't that good, mostly because they don't mix well with fuel and do a poor job at lubricating the seals when injected.
I'm not sure about what oils you have there but any synthetic castrol, redline, royal purple, amsoil will do just fine. Rotarygod wrote something about mobil1 on rx8club.com years ago... i'm not sure if it's still relevant since products are constantly updated but i'd err on the side of caution and avoid it

If you premix a sohn adapter is completely useless, even on a s1 rx8. I posted a list of good premix oils here some time ago, check it out!

    Thanks bse,
I was reading also that some synthetics do not completely burn in a rotary and may leave some ash and carbon buildup that can cause apex seals to stick, ultimately resulting in engine failure ..

That was the case with mobil1 in the past!
Premix is the culprit anyway... it truly keeps the engine clean. There should be pictures in here that show the tear down of an engine that ran on premix vs a regular one.

I read your thread listing the good premix oils of your choice.. very informative. Can you recommend a ratio of premix per tank of fuel? Thanks..

a quarter of lubricant should last around 4 fill ups. That's roughly 220\250g per 50l of fuel
